Andy Martin
Andy arrived in punk rock London in 1977. In 1985 he left his post of Art Editor at the NME (New Musical Express) and began a career as an imagemaker. Regular appearances in national and international press followed.
From childhood, a self confessed ‘de-constructer’, Andy has always enjoyed the process of breaking up material in order to re-model it.
“I get excited playing with visual material, trying different compositions until something connects and the piece takes on a life of its own, a sort of accident management. I like to keep my work methods fluid and not to get stuck in one way of thinking” Andy Martin.
The ‘play’ aspect in Andy’s work is evident in the sparky, funny, compositional creations that pivot on a wordplay here and a found image there, resulting in a colourful, energetic, savvy piece of communication.
Andy’s work has evolved continually, with particular emphasis on experiments with moving image. From short, snappy downloadable ideograms for phone provider 3G in Japan, to more fully fledged short films, Andy’s combinations of on screen animation and live footage (deconstructed and re-modeled) have created numerous memorable short films and have lead him to collaborations with the Poet Ian McMillan, a man he has admired for many years. Their first collaboration was the film “Messages from A Russian Heatwave”, which was followed by the book ‘Ideas have Legs’, the result of verbal / visual frissons between the two.
Put simply, Andy twists hidden meanings from perfectly good stories, keeping everyone on their toes in the process.
