Annabel Wright

Annabel works from a room in her house in Glasgow. Her desk is an old dinning table, on which stands her various pots of brushes, but her favourite trusted brushes are the only ones ever used.

Annabel’s enjoyment of drawing and articulate sense of play, whatever her choice of media has led her to be involved in a variety of unique commissions. In 2008 Annabel became the figurehead of the ‘Six Cities, Scotland Show’, her artwork adorning the billboards of Glasgow. For two consecutive years Annabel has been commissioned to produce artwork for New York’s School of Visual Arts’ Summer School. The campaign ran through New York subway trains, outdoor advertising citywide and the local press. Annabel’s work has also been commissioned for many corporate campaigns, communicating abstract and often sensitive messages, as in her work for Amnesty International’s fund raising initiatives.

Annabel’s artwork conveys a certain energy both at billboard size and at a more intimate scale. Her love of drawing is reminiscent of someone approaching it for the first time, but without any of the fear or apprehension that is often associated with learning a new skill. Often using flamboyant colour, her artwork is imbued with a depth of understanding and familiarity with her subject but Annabel’s artworks always retain the same intuitive quality. Perhaps what’s most misunderstood about Annabel’s work, is the complicated art of making a piece of work look simple.
