Darrel Rees
Darrel studied at Bath Academy of Art and then The Royal College
Strongly influenced by Dada and the likes of Raul Haussman and John Heartfield, the fact that he studied Design rather than Illustration is probably most evident in the minimal amount of hand made marks and the strong bent towards communication.
Darrel has worked as an illustrator since 1986, joining influential London studio ‘Big Orange’ in 1992. He founded illustration agency Heart (London) in 1994 and Heart USA Inc (New York) in 2001. He contributed to The Education of an Illustrator (by Steven Heller), is the author of “How to Be an Illustrator” (LKP,London, 2008) and has written for Eye magazine. He is a member of the Society of Publication Designers in New York and D&AD in the UK, acting as a jury foreman on its awards scheme and is also a visiting lecturer at various Universities in the UK.
During a career that started whilst still at college, Darrel has worked for a variety of clients in the advertising and music industries in addition to his instantly recognisable illustrations for magazines and newspapers, turning events in the news into compelling graphic comment.
