Lara Harwood
Her enthusiasm, love of colour and deft brushwork, coupled with assured application of ideas has kept Lara Harwood in constant demand. Another proponent of the art of making something complicated look simple, the exuberant grace of Lara’s calligraphic brush work belies the intensity of concentration that goes into distilling such iconic images. Whilst Lara’s work and intelligent solutions are well versed editorially, her work has mostly been used to great effect for corporate branding, providing a warm and articulate representation to branding values that often have no visual reference points to hang on to. This approach is exemplified in her work for BDO Stoy Hayward.
More publicly, Lara’s is probably best known for her charming food packaging; the identity for Booths Supermarkets, packaging for M&S Deli range and numerous wine bottle labels.
For her illustration projects, Lara mostly works in watercolor and often at a much larger scale than is eventually needed for reproduction. This allows Lara to achieve the sense of movement that is so evident in her work. Individual elements of an image are painted again and again until exactly the right line or brush stroke is obtained.
Lara’s command of play is utilised in her own print making practice, something that she runs along side her illustration career. With a Masters Degree from Camberwell College of Art, Lara is an accomplished silk-screen printer, operating from her own silkscreen studio. Lara’s printmaking has increasingly become more abstract and focused on colour. Her work can be found in the collections of The V&A Museum and UNESCO as well as numerous private collections both in the UK and abroad.
