Marion Deuchars
An accomplished draftswoman and painter, Marion’s work moves between figurative and semi-abstract painting, incorporating iconic graphic elements. Her approach to image making has continually evolved in a way that has transcended external influences of style and fashion. This in turn has become one of the unique and most distinguishable characteristics of her body of work, which cohesively represents an intuitive and assured voice.
Marion’s commissions have required the distillation of complex messages into compelling and captivating images, most often for clients of a corporate nature. However, her diversity has involved her in all sectors of the design, advertising and editorial industries. Between 2006 and 2007 Marion undertook a daily Guardian Comment column after the re-design of the newspaper. She has drawn for and alongside Jamie Oliver during the commission for his cookery book ‘Jamie’s Dinners’. Twice Marion’s produced covers for Penguin’s publication of the Orwell classics, the first time nearly 10 years ago. Within the retail industry her work has been used to sell bras, cookers, and art materials. Her most recent annual report was for the Dutch Police but she is probably most well known for her annual report for D&AD, the entire report having been handwritten. In 2011 she designed a set of six stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Much of Marion’s work incorporates hand drawn letter forms, often directly using her own handwriting. “Each person’s hand produces a unique signature. It could be said to be a counterpoint to the formality and arguably the primacy of computers. Sometimes however, it is simply more appropriate to the subject matter. Handwriting is a form of drawing and some days it flows beautifully and other days it just doesn’t. There’s an element of unpredictability and that keeps things interesting”. Marion Deuchars.
Marion is the external assessor at Brighton University and has taught for many years at the Royal College of Art. She has been a visiting lecturer at numerous colleges around the UK and has served as a D&AD juror on more than one occasion. Marion is a member of the prestigious Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).
In June 2010, Marion was awarded by the V&A, ‘Best Book Cover 2010’ as part of the V&A Illustration Awards for her cover of George Orwell’s Burmese Days.
