Scott Garrett

Scott Garrett compares choosing illustration as a career path, to a snake pit. “I just fell into it. I like to draw and I just followed the path and it has lead me here.”

Scott’s humour, which revolves around a rather absurdist outlook on everyday life, is evident in much of his work. Life’s nonsensical nature is Scott’s prime fascination and reference for his illustrations. Drawing provides Scott with the opportunity to bring his own little fantasies to life.

His recent ‘Wish List’ project was a self initiated journey, exploring the “hopes and wishes of a motley few”. The characters are a mix of imagined and real… as diverse as figures from an amateur painting picked up in a charity shop, or a kid’s toy, or perhaps a character from one of the many festival processions that take place where Scott lives in St Leonard on Sea. These characters are then given a brief voice, forcing little truths from them, however trivial or tragic they may be.

The eight year old Scott Garrett, sat watching the Saturday afternoon wrestling at his Nan’s, whilst drawing and colouring-in (normally footballers, or superheroes) would look at him now on a Saturday afternoon drawing and colouring-in and say “Thanks, you’ve kept it just the way I like it…............ but what’ve you done with my hair ?”
