Beat Issue 1
The Volvic Box Issue
Designed by Jason Godrey of Godfrey Design, Beat No. 1 ‘The Volvic Box Issue’ was launched at the Art Directors Club, in New York, as part of Heart USA’s belated launch exhibition in November 2003. There had always been a disatisfaction with commercial promotional annuals within the agency and the upcoming exhibition in New York presented itself as the perfect moment to divert funds normally put towards those commercial annuals, into producing a bespoke promotional item that would double as a catalogue for the show.
The ‘Volvic Box’ of the title, referred to the very early days of the agency, when an old cardboard box was used to store samples of the Artists work, photos, bits of PR or anything that was considered ‘worth archiving’. Since the show in New York was introducing the artists, the agency and its ‘modus operandi’ to new clients, The Volvic Box was an apt analogy for the content of the first issue of Beat. Showcasing the artists and some of the alchemy of picture-making, the issue provided interviews with or editorial on each artist, to offer some insights into the sources of inspiration and working practice of the illustrators as well as their agency.
As each issue employs a different guest designer, Beat continues to provide us with a chance to aspire towards an exemplary quality of print and design.
