Beat Issue 3
Gypsy Dream Book
Beat No. 3 came about after chancing upon an old book in a New York flea market. ‘New Gipsy Dream and Fortune Teller’ contained the hidden meanings behind dreams. The book’s listed definitions related to a bygone era, when life was steeped in agrarian concerns and superstitions
For example, to dream of windmills meant, “you will experience some loss”… and “to dream of buying wool foretells that you will marry your present lover”…
The book was used as a starting point for a game of consequences, providing us with a narrative framework for the images. As their brief, the Artists were each given the definition of one of the words that had appeared in the game of consequences. They worked on these definitions with no idea of the overall dream story. The resulting issue of Beat is a three-way juxtaposition of gypsy, Artist and story with an outcome that couldn’t have been foreseen.
