ANDY MARTIN – Biography

Andy grew up in the North of England, he skipped art school and after a post as the Art Editor of the NME he began a career as an image-maker. Andy has been represented by Heart since 2007.

A self confessed ‘de-constructer’, Andy has always enjoyed the process of breaking up material in order to re-model it. His working process involves experimenting with visual material, arranging different compositions until something connects and the piece takes on a life of its own. Andy’s compositional creations pivot on wordplay resulting in succinct and savvy pieces of communication.

He works regularly editorially in the US and the UK, producing covers for TIME magazine and Newsweek amongst other newsstand, broadsheet and custom publishing clients. He has illustrated two Steven Pinker books for The Folio Society and numerous fiction and non-fiction covers for Editions J’ai Lu, Editions Gallimard, Penguin, Macmillan and Faber & Faber. Jersey Post have commissioned him to create stamp designs and he has worked on advertising campaigns for British Airways and Nike amongst others.

Andy also works in moving-image, as an alternative, yet complimentary activity to his illustration career. His combinations of on screen animation and live footage (deconstructed and re-modelled) have lead him to collaborations with the Poet Ian McMillan, a man he has admired for many years. Their first collaboration was the film “Messages from A Russian Heatwave”, which was followed by the book ‘Ideas have Legs’, published by Fuel.
