Lara was born in Epson, England. She studied for her BA in Illustration followed by an MA in Printmaking at Camberwell College of Arts. Lara has been represented by Heart since 1996.
Lara’s artwork is a colourful representation of life. She uses watercolour painting, paper cut outs and screen printing techniques to create her work, sometimes a combination of the two. Whilst definitely within the control of an experienced hand, Lara’s work never fails to be spontaneous and intuitive.
Lara has a love of nature and is often inspired by it. She has a regular column in the The Sunday Times Magazine illustrating Simon Barnes wildlife column. In her commission for the respiratory centre for Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital it was through nature; birds, a forest and a garden that she chose to create a beautiful and uplifting artwork for visitors and patients to enjoy. Food has been another recurring subject in Lara’s commissions she has often illustrated recipe columns, has created the identity for the Booths chain of supermarkets including packaging, permanent instore murals and window graphics. Lara’s artwork has also been used on coffee cups for Waitrose, limited edition Cannes Film Festival labels for San Pellegrino, a deli range of food for Marks & Spencers and wine labels for a French vineyard.
Her graphic thinking and bold drawing style has been picked up for many design briefs. From an advertising campaign for the ENO’s production of Aida, to posters for TFL and a postage stamp for the Royal Mail celebrating the Paralympic games. Her ability to translate brand messages into visual metaphors has also led her to create several image libraries for corporate clients such as BDO Stoy Hayward and Osborne Clarke Law Firm. The playful and exuberant qualities of her work have been put to good use in advertising campaigns for the children’s Polka Theatre. In 2016 she was asked by the National Theatre to make a limited edition print to commemorate the end of their run of War Horse. Lara was one of five artists to contribute the Royal Shakepeare Company’s ‘Well Said!’ exhibition marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Lara created an animation in response to Margaret Atwood’s selection of a quote from The Tempest.
Running in parallel and often intersecting with her commercial career, Lara also maintains a fine art practice. With her own screen printing studio she has gathered a large following for her graphic and iconic prints as well as watercolours produced on location on her travels to India and Morocco.
