Masha Krasnova Shabaeva

Masha Krasnova Shabaeva is an illustrator based in Rotterdam. Masha works digitally creating a mixture of figurative artworks inspired by an interest in architecture, and surreal images that seem like memories, using distortion and alternating planes. Through her writing and personal projects, she explores the importance of diverse human identities and critiques the long history of inauthentic portrayal in illustration. She has written and illustrated comic books and worked on animations, artworks for clothing, record covers and campaigns for clients including Adidas. Her work for the weekly podcast ‘Watt Matters’ about renewable energy transformation has been recognised by the Society of Publications Designers.

Editorially Masha has worked for Bloomberg Businessweek, Esquire, The Financial Times, FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, McSweeney’s, GQ, The Guardian, Jacobin, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, Republik, Süddeutsche Zeitung and de Volkskrant amongst others.

Masha has undertaken several large-scale commissions for museums and institutions including permanent exhibition graphics for the National Railway Museum in England and Zeeuws Museum in The Netherlands

National Railway Museum

A large scale commission for The Science Museum to create illustrations for the new Wonderlab Gallery at the National Railway Museum

Over thirty-five artworks for the labels that accompany the interactive exhibits. Each label is comprised of two artworks; primary illustrations that show the exhibit being used by a group of people and secondary illustrations that provide further context as a reference to everyday life or engineering links to the railways

We were really excited to work with Masha to create the illustrations for our exhibit labels. We were drawn to Masha’s imaginative work and her simplicity of style which we felt would be perfect to communicate with our young audience. Masha created a diverse and inclusive family of characters for the labels, as well as imagining playful and surprising scenes for the huge ‘Engineering Reimagined’ interactive wall. Masha’s drawings and her pared back use of the Wonderlab colour palette work beautifully in the gallery helping us create a warm and permissive space for visitors”

“The calendar's theme was briefed by Bebe Books. However, I accepted their offer without even thinking twice because some of the themes have always been interesting to me. The human body and the fluidity of gender and sexuality are certainly the central ones. I felt that I could experiment with them a lot in my drawings. I decided to concentrate my attention on longing. Longing to connect with your own body, to play with it and pleasure it, which can come in a myriad of different ways and forms.” Masha Krasnova Shabaeva
