ROMY BLÜMEL – Biography
Romy was born in Bautzen, Germany. She now works from a studio in the Neukölln area of Berlin. She has been represented by Heart since meeting in London in 2011.
In the process of creating her artworks, Romy employs an unusual technique, emulating the look of a linocut but in her preferred medium of paint. She draws directly on to an area of paint with a Opinel knife or etching needle. Working in paint allows Romy to communicate with a broad spectrum of colour and to utilise the texture of brush strokes both bold and subtle. Paintings are sometimes merged with ink drawings, layers being created in several stages.
Romy is a regular contributor to international broadsheets such as the The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Der Frietag. She illustrates a monthly column written by John Simpson in The Telegraph as well as working for magazines such as The New Yorker, Condé Nast Traveller and World of Interiors. She has worked on advertising campaigns for Weleda, TUI Cruises and Felix Jud bookstores and branding and packaging for Peony Vodkas. Romy’s illustrations have also been commissioned for several book covers, including Charles Dickens’ classic ‘Great Expectations’.
Romy is a member of the female artist collective ´Spring´ founded in Hamburg in 2004. Together they produce Spring Magazine an anthology of comics, illustration and free drawing based on a chosen theme and published annually.
Romy has exhibited her work as original paintings in group shows in Shanghai, Seoul, Budapest, Paris, London and Antwerp.
