Simon Pemberton is a mixed media artist, obsessive with texture, mark making and colour. He uses acrylic, watercolour, inks and a wide variety of found textures and objects to paint, draw and collage with. Nature and the outdoor environment have a huge influence on his compositions. His artworks are combined digitally in expressive ways that reinforce the idea or mood of an image. His approach has been used to great effect in commissions such as an illustrated edition of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ for The Folio Society and packaging for Taylors of Harrogate evoking the intensity of different coffees and their origins. A more contemplative tone was required of his work for The London Philharmonic Orchestra, accompanying a season of performances exploring belonging and displacement.
Simon has produced many books covers most recently for Ali Smith’s latest novel ‘Gliff’, a history of British rap and grime by Aniefiok Ekpoudom, and a set of Thomas Mann novels for Vintage Classics. Other clients include The Royal Mail, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Harper’s Magazine, The Financial Times, The Playhouse Theatre and WWF.
